Introducing a clinical study for people with intermediate Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
Recruiting Now
What is early Age-related Macular Degeneration (eAMD)?
Early or intermediate stages of age-related macular degeneration occur when there is a build-up of waste material (drusen or plague) under the retina. Typically, with early AMD, you will notice little or no impact on your vision. With intermediate AMD, the drusen will be larger and you may notice some changes to your central vision, but the progression is slow. It’s possible to have AMD in only one eye, or for each eye to be in different stages of AMD.
Early AMD Symptoms & Risk Factors
While there have been major advances over the past decade in the treatment of AMD in its late stages, there has been little progress in the treatment of the disease in its early stages.
- Have you or a family member been diagnosed with early AMD?
- Has your Doctor or Optometrist told you that you have drusen?
- Has a family member needed injections in the eye for the vision?
- Do you have trouble seeing at night?
If you answered "YES" to any of the above questions, you may be eligible to participate in a clinical trial in multiple locations in Australia that are currently recruiting patients. The trial is investigating the effect of subthreshold nanosecond laser treatment on disease progression in eyes with intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Treatments for early AMD
Currently, the only treatments for early-stage AMD are anti-oxidant vitamins and other nutritional supplements, together with lifestyle changes such as losing weight and stopping smoking.
When you are diagnosed with early AMD, your doctor will likely monitor the progression of the disease until such a time that more aggressive drug treatment, such as anti-VGEF injections, become useful.
Like many medical conditions for which effective treatments are not yet available, there are a number of clinical trials underway to assess potential new treatments for early AMD.

AMD causes blurred vision and loss of vision in the middle of what you would normally see. You may find it hard to drive, read, and see people's faces.
